Despite widespread media reports of the importance of saving for retirement, less than half of those who participate in employer-provided retirement plans have a well defined investment strategy.

These individuals may lack an investment strategy, but they’re confident, nonetheless, that they’ll have the money they need to enjoy a comfortable standard of living throughout retirement.

A Spectrem Group survey shows 61% of those who participate in employer-provided retirement plans are optimistic they’ll have enough income to live comfortably throughout retirement. A slightly smaller percentage (58%) think they’ve made the right investment choices to produce a good return.

Given this state of optimism, it’s no surprise that many individuals are not looking for advice regarding their choice of investments for retirement.

When they do need advice, 32% seek help from an investment professional; 28% discuss ideas with others but make their own decisions; and 15% discuss ideas with others and follow their advice. Another 25% believe they’re knowledgeable enough to make their own investment decisions.
