It seems that there will. The Extreme Hybrid from ATF Trinitywas introduced at the Detroit auto show. It is similar to the Toyota Prius that it can run 40 miles on electricity before it switches to running cleanly and efficiently on gasoline. But because, it is known, that most people drive less than 40 miles a day, that can can and will replace most of the gasoline use, even on only one charge a day.

The cost of the electricity charge overnight is something like $1 depending on where you live, which is nothing compared to the rising cost of gasoline. There is much talk about hydrogen cars, but we are still far away from those options.

But here is a world changing break through. These types of technology shifts may happen once or twice in a lifetime, and here is one in front of us. The electric car has failed, spectacularly, in the past. This design is based more off of the winning design of the gas/battery hybrid than the electric car. It will make people, like me, think twice, wait and plan to buy one, than it is an innovative enterprise that will change the way we look at our cars and fossil fuel consumption.
