Marion, a 65-year-old widow, relies on an advisor for investment advice. Even though she claims she is not satisfied with her financial advisor, Marion has taken no steps to change advisors.

Short and spunky, with a no-nonsense attitude, Marion doesn’t hold back when expressing her opinions about her current advisor. “I feel that all he does is push products and try to sell me stuff.”

Her investment strategy is conservative, with most of her money in certificates of deposit. A self-proclaimed nervous Nellie, Marion worries about money.

Marion’s main concern for retirement is to maintain her standard of living, although when pressed she admits her failing health keeps her up at night. “If I have another stoke, I could become incapacitated and then who would take care of me?”

Marion becomes animated when asked whether her advisor has spoken to her about her goals for retirement.

“He told me to buy long-term health care insurance. I didn't get past the physical; I flunked. They said I was a stroke candidate, and they were right.”

After suffering a stroke last year, Marion has become more and more concerned about her health and her future.

In order to not be a burden on her family, she has tried to take steps to plan for her retirement. “On a scale of one to 10, I’d say my level of preparedness for retirement is about a seven.”

One aspect of her financial plan is to switch advisors. “I want someone to tell me what type of investments are right for me. I want someone to look at the big picture.”

Marion is not adverse to risk and is ready to put her money into stocks and mutual funds, but the right advice is needed before pulling the trigger.

“I have a lot of medical bills now, so I can’t afford to be conservative. I’m willing to take risks in order to make money.”

The topic turns to the future, and Marion sighs. “I need to get my investments in order because there are so many unknowns. With the war and everything, I worry.”
