The average full-time mother provides 94.7 hours of services each year worth a salary of $112,962, according to the 12th Annual Mother’s Day Survey by Salary.com.
Working mothers put in an even longer week, working an average of 35.7 hours a week in positions paying an average annual salary of $45,515, then logging 57.9 hours a week on household chores and parenting duties, which would be worth $66,979 a year in the job market, according to the 2012 survey of 8000 moms.
Salary equivalents are determining by evaluating the amount of time the average mom spends on various tasks – such as cooking and cleaning – and then multiplying those hours by average pay for those jobs. The most time-consuming job – that of a cook - commands an average hourly wage of $13.11. According to Salary.com, moms spend about 13.9 hours a week cooking, a service worth more than $182 in labor each week.
The most expensive service provided by a mom – that of chief executive officer – is valued at $55.07 an hour. According to Salary.com, the average stay-at-home mom spends about 3.2 hours a week in the CEO position, for a total of $176 in services.
“According to our job descriptions, a CEO ‘plans and directs all aspects of an organization's policies, objectives, and initiatives.’ The moms in our survey are the social directors, policymakers, community organizers, financial directors and even breadwinners for their families,” said Salary.com in a statement. “They provide leadership and set the course, just like the leaders of Fortune 500 companies.”
The average stay-at-home moms spend an average of 6.3 hours a week as a laundry machine operator, a skill valued at $9.86 an hour. They work 7.6 hours a week as a psychologist, a skill valued at $36.85 an hour, and 7.7 hours a week as a janitor, a skill valued at $9.77 an hour. Serving as a van driver consumes 7.9 hours a week and is worth $13.83 an hour. Stay-at-home moms work 8.9 hours a week as a computer operator, a skill valued at $15.43, and 10.7 hours a week as a facilities manager, a job that pays $31.88 an hour. Another 9.77 hours is spent as a housekeeper, work that pays 9.77 an hour.
Another measure of mom’s financial worth, the 2012 Mother's Day Index compiled by the website Insure.com using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, values the assorted tasks performed at $60,182 – a slight drop from last year.
