Almost Half of American Investors Donate to Japanese Relief Funds

And Still Support Nuclear Energy

In research with affluent households (those with $500,000 of investable assets or more), 45% have already donated to a Japanese relief fund while an additional 32% are still considering making a donation. Only 23% indicate they will not donate. Non-Millionaires are more likely to have donated (50%) than Millionaires (44%). Women are more likely to have donated than men (48% vs. 44%).

How did these individuals make their donations? Seven percent of individuals donated through their mobile phone. Twenty seven percent donated via a local charity. The most common donation methodology was to donate online to a large service organization such as the Red Cross or similar relief organizations. Twenty two percent donated in some other fashion.

Despite the serious challenges faced by Japan’s nuclear energy plants, 60% of U.S. investors still support using more nuclear power in the future. Only 22% do not support the use of nuclear energy while 19% are uncertain. Twenty seven percent of investors have changed their opinions regarding nuclear energy due to the Japanese crisis.
